A discussion of heating vents and covers

Properly Installing Air Vent Covers

How well versed are you when it comes to choosing and installing air vent covers? Let us help.

Covering up your vents is a necessity, because they have to be protected whether they are indoors or outside.  But you’re also going to find that  you have to choose the right types to protect the vent, and also just for where you’re going to have them installed.  You’ll find that some air vent covers can be more ideal for certain places than others, and that’s something that you’re going to want to think about.  There are a lot of different types of covers out there too, so it can make your decision pretty hard.

But just as important as your decision on which types of air vent covers to choose, is also how to install them.  You’re going to find that a vent cover has to be properly installed or they can cause all sorts of problems with the way that your system is made to work.  So you have to be sure that you know what you’re doing, or you’re going to want to enlist the help of a professional.  Either way, here’s what you’re going to want to know when it comes to installing the right type of system throughout your home:

1) Picking out the right covers.

Before you think about installing, you first need to be sure that you’re going to be able to find the right types of covers that you can install on your vents. You’ll find that this means actually finding some type of air vent covers that are going to suit you by the standards for how they are made to work. Usually you want to be sure that they are going to be durable as well, which means you usually want to go with some type of metal vent cover, because you know those are going to be made to last.

2) Properly aligning them with the vent.

You have to be sure that your cover is properly aligned with the vent, and that doesn’t mean just fitting them to the surface.  But rather, you’re going to have to figure out how they go on based upon how they are made to work.  Something that you’re going to find with vents is that they almost always contain moving parts of valves that are made to direct air flow.

You want to align them so that in the winter time airflow will be directed downward.  That’s really vital, because hot air tends to rise and you get the most out of your heating by directing the flow downward otherwise it’s just going to go right up and out of your home.  But in the summer the colder air is going to tend to sink lower more naturally, so you want to direct that towards the ceiling so that it slowly lowers to cover an entire room.

3) Think about installing vents that can be closed.

Just as directing airflow is vital, remember that you also want to install air vent covers that can be totally closed off in certain rooms as well.  That way you can ensure that you’re going to be able to completely close them off effectively, which is going to virtually guarantee that you can save on heating and cooling.  For example, some areas of the home like unused bedrooms, or basements and the like just don’t need the same heat or air conditioning, so why not cut off their flow so you’re not paying to heat them too?

4) Make sure you measure before buying however.

A big mistake that you can make when buying air vent covers is not measuring properly before you actually go to install.  This is an important thing that you’re going to have to do, so that you can make sure you’re really ready to install your covers.  If you don’t have the right types of vents, you’re going to find that they are not going to fit exactly, and that can be a problem when it comes to airflow.

5) Buying is easy, however.

Finding the right types of air vent covers is pretty easy though, and retailers like Home Depot or Lowes are bound to have just what you need. Whether you’re looking for an abundance of vents, or if you’re just looking for one or two to complete your home properly, you’re going to find that here you can get just the styles of air vent covers that you want.
